A document made for US Letter paper prints badly on A4, and the other way round. A quick resize gives every page a consistent size and stops text being clipped at the edge.
What Resize PDF does
Resize PDF puts each page onto a new page of your chosen size. It offers the standard sizes:
| Size | Dimensions |
|---|---|
| A4 | 210 × 297 mm |
| Letter | 8.5 × 11 in |
| Legal | 8.5 × 14 in |
| A3 | 297 × 420 mm |
Your original page is scaled to fit the new one, keeping its proportions, and centred. Nothing is stretched or squashed.
Steps
- Open Resize PDF and upload the file (up to 50 MB).
- Choose the target size.
- Download the result and look at a few pages.
What to expect
Paper sizes have different proportions, so a page can end up with extra white space at the top and bottom or at the sides. Moving from Letter to A4 usually adds a thin band of white space because A4 is a little taller and narrower. That is normal and doesn't hurt the content.
If you go from a small size to a large one, content is enlarged. From large to small, it is reduced, so check that small print is still readable.
Different sizes in one file
Merged documents often mix sizes. Resize the finished file to one standard size so every page prints the same. Our merge guide explains the merge step.
Tidy up afterwards
- Trim extra white space with Crop PDF if a page ended up with wide bands.
- Add page numbers with Add Page Numbers once the size is settled, since the numbers are placed relative to the page edges.
- Check the file size and compress if needed with Compress PDF.
- Fix orientation first if any page is sideways, using Rotate PDF.
Printing tips
If you only want the printer to fit the page, the "fit to page" option in your print dialog does the same job for that print, without changing the file. Resizing the PDF itself makes sense when you are sending the file to someone else, submitting to a portal with a required size, or archiving.
Frequently Asked Questions
Will resizing distort my pages?
No. Pages are scaled evenly and centred, so proportions stay the same.
Why is there white space at the edges?
The new page has different proportions from the old one. That is normal.
Can I use a custom size?
The tool offers the standard sizes above.
Does resizing affect quality?
Text and vector graphics stay sharp. Images are scaled with the page.
